Argentine Fan Dies Following Fight With Supporters Of Opposing Team

Argentine first division side Belgrano confirmed that supporter Emanuel Barbo "died from injuries he sustained after an incident with Talleres Cordoba followers," according to Joe Wright of GOAL. Barbo was "left in a coma in hospital after he was set upon by a group of supporters during the derby match at Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes." Broadcast footage showed the man "rushing down the stand to avoid being attacked, before he falls over the edge of the tier onto a concrete staircase." Another fan, Diego Frydman, was also hurt in the incident, Belgrano said after the match. The club said in a statement, "Club Atletico Belgrano is profoundly saddened by the death of Emanuel Balbo." The team described it as "a very sad day for the whole sky blue family." The Argentine FA condemned the incident and "vowed to work with authorities to locate the perpetrators." The AFA said in a statement, "The Argentine Football Association joins with the family of Emanuel Balbo in this difficult and painful moment and strongly condemns the criminal action that occurred in the game between Belgrano and Talleres de Cordoba. ... We will offer all possible collaboration with the security services to determine those responsible for this inconceivable aggression" (GOAL, 4/17). EL MUNDO reported prosecutor Liliana Sánchez announced that four suspects were arrested -- one a minor -- for "aggravated homicide" and added that the "instigator" remains at large (EL MUNDO, 4/17).
