British Cycling To Introduce Code Of Conduct In Response To Culture Review

British Cycling "started work on the development of a code of conduct as part of its response to an independent review" into the culture of the organization, according to the BBC. An investigation began following "accusations of bullying and sexism" toward top-level cyclists. British Cycling Chair Jonathan Browning said that checks were being added to protect against "behaviours that are inappropriate" to individual riders. UK Sport CEO Liz Nicholl said that the independent review has "identified valuable lessons" for British Cycling and other sports it funds (BBC, 4/11). In London, Matt Slater reported the publication of a report into claims of bullying has been "postponed again until May" but Browning is "determined to push on." Set up last April after several ex-riders came forward with "denied allegations of discrimination, inappropriate behaviour and sexism," the review was "initially aiming to release its key findings by the end of November." Since then, however, the review has become "bogged down in legal wrangling," as those criticized in the panel's first take "strongly rejected its findings." The process has been criticized for "not seeking a wider range of views, with many more supportive voices only now speaking out." Browning said, "I wouldn't want anybody to think that we're sitting here shell-shocked at what has happened -- I've been really encouraged with the progress we've made already" (INDEPENDENT, 4/11).
