Veteran broadcaster DAVID PARRY-JONES died, aged 83. The former BBC Wales Today presenter and rugby analyst for BBC Radio 5 Live died at a hospice in Penarth on Monday. He was known as "the voice of Welsh rugby" and commentated on "historic sporting occasions" such as Welsh Rugby Union club Llanelli's famous win over the All Blacks in '72 (BBC, 4/10).

FATAL HORSE FALL: Tributes are "flowing" for veteran country jockey DARREN JONES, who died in a three-horse fall that left the horse racing industry in a state of "shock" and "disbelief." The 48-year-old is "being remembered as a highly accomplished jockey, a fiercely loyal family man and a person of integrity." He "suffered severe head injuries after the accident at a country race meet" in Warialda, NSW. Race trainer SUE GRILLS described him as "a typical battler from the bush." Chief Steward SHANE CULLEN, who officiated the meet, said that an investigation "was underway into why the horse fell" (ABC, 4/9).
