Real Madrid, Barcelona Surpass 100 Million Followers On Facebook

Barça and Real Madrid's rivalry "carries over to social media," with both clubs announcing on Sunday that they surpassed 100 million followers on Facebook, according to EL PERIODICO. 

Since Barcelona's comeback against Paris St. Germain in the Champions League in March, the club has added 3.6 million followers on Facebook. Real Madrid said in a statement on its website that "it was the fastest-growing brand in sports, not only on Facebook, but across all social media platforms" in '16 (EL PERIODICO, 4/2). Real Madrid had more than 1.6 billion video views in '16 and published nine of the 10 most-viewed Facebook posts of the year (Real Madrid).

NORTH AMERICAN EXPANSION: Barcelona's FCBEscola youth academy project continued its int'l expansion with new branches in Virginia (outside Washington DC); Dammam, Saudi Arabia, and Montreal. The '17-18 season will begin with 31 FCBEscolas around the world, including a total of nine in Canada and the U.S. (Barcelona).
