Telefónica To Sponsor Real Madrid's Football, Basketball Teams

Spanish telecom Telefónica will be the technological partner of Real Madrid's football and basketball teams for the next two seasons after reportedly signing a two-year deal worth around €15M ($16.1M), according to the EP. The deal is expected to be announced on Thursday at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabéu. Telefónica, through its Movistar brand, will not appear on the shirts of Real Madrid's football or basketball teams, "but it is a very significant deal to boost the technological area." Sources said that the agreement is similar to one it signed with Barcelona in late '15. The telecom is also in talks with Atlético Madrid to "contribute its experience in technological development to the future of the team's new Wanda Metropolitano stadium" (EP, 3/29). MUNDO DEPORTIVO reported "although it was initially reported" that the deal was worth €100M ($108M), "Mundo Deportivo learned that it is worth €15M over two years" (MUNDO DEPORTIVO, 3/29). In Madrid, José Félix Díaz reported Telefónica will offer WiFi at the Santiago Bernabéu and will launch a Real Madrid-themed application. However, this "does not mean" the club has terminated its relationship with Fly Emirates (MARCA, 3/29).
