La Liga President Javier Tebas Says Matches Could Soon Be Available Over-The-Top

La Liga President Javier Tebas "is convinced that La Liga matches will be available on the likes of Netflix, Amazon Video, and HBO," and that the day when this arrives "will not take long," according to BUSINESS INSIDER. Tebas said that a "major rethinking and shifting" of the concept of "traditional TV" is "called for." He added that millennials do not wish "to be tethered to a pay-TV package but want more freedom, and this freedom is afforded by platforms like Netflix and Amazon Video." In Germany, Tebas pointed out, none of La Liga’s over-the-top offerings "are through a traditional TV channel." Netflix has been "consistently adamant against" carrying live sports in its catalog. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings recently "reiterated for the umpteenth time that Netflix has no plans of featuring live sports." There are a "couple reasons" why, including "exorbitant licensing costs" and the fact that live content "is a deviation from its brand" (BUSINESS INSIDER, 3/20).
