Samsung Plans Real-Time Virtual Reality For 2018 PyeongChang Games

Samsung Electronics is "looking to allow viewers at home to feel in real time as if they are at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics through virtual reality headsets," according to Shin Ji-hye of the KOREA HERALD. Samsung Electronics Mobile Marketing Dir Cha Young-tae said, "We plan to offer virtual technology so that, let's say, viewers with a VR headset in Seoul can enjoy the sports game as if they are at the scene. We are in discussion with the International Olympic Committee and Olympic Broadcasting Services to utilize our VR technology during the Olympics" (KOREA HERALD, 3/15).

BROADCAST LOGO: Eurosport unveiled its on-screen logo for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics -- the broadcaster's first as the home of the Olympic Games in Europe. The logo brings together the current Eurosport wordmark with the PyeongChang logo typeface, underpinned by the Olympic rings. The three existing logos are headed by a mountain silhouette -- the natural setting of the Winter Games. The silhouette background is arched, echoing the shape of the Olympic rings, and will come in several variations, using a color palette expressing the spirit of modern K-pop culture (Eurosport).

SURVEILLANCE: KYODO reported surveillance cameras "will be installed on each of the roughly 3,800 subway cars in Tokyo," their operators said Tuesday, "part of an effort to improve public safety ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics." Starting in '18 or '19, "Tokyo Metro Co. will begin installing a camera above every door of each subway car, while Toei Subway will install several cameras in the ceiling of every car over the period of just under 10 years from next August" (KYODO, 3/15).
