League One Side Chesterfield Put Up For Sale By Owner For £15M

Struggling League One club Chesterfield is "to be put up for sale" by its majority shareholder Dave Allen, according to the BBC. Club Dir Ashley Carson revealed the news at Monday's annual general meeting. It "comes in the wake" of CEO Chris Turner taking over last week "as the club's director of football." Allen, who previously had shares in Sheffield Wednesday, first invested in Chesterfield in '09, taking over as chair from Barrie Hubbard in '12 "before resigning" in Nov. '16. He said then that he had invested £1.9M over the previous two years (BBC, 2/6). The DERBYSHIRE TIMES reported Chesterfield "received no firm bids for the sale of the club," Carson confirmed. The Spireites were "put up for sale last November" when Allen stepped down as chair and "slapped" a £15M ($18.7M) price tag on the club. Carson: "I'm sure there's a deal to be done there. What I need is someone to come forward who is really serious about it and let's see how far we can get with it" (DERBYSHIRE TIMES, 2/7).
