Franchise Notes: Arsenal Fans Vent After Season Ticket Prices Increase By 3%

Arsenal’s decision to increase 8,000 of its Platinum ticket prices at Emirates Stadium by 3% from next season has "caused anger" among fans. Season ticket holder Mike McCabe said in an email, "This is an absolute disgrace." Club Level seats range from £2,910 ($3,600) in the corner to £5,755 ($7,200) on the halfway line. Arsenal pointed out that it has "held Club Level seat prices flat for the past two seasons" and the reason behind the increase is "rising costs and the need for continuous reinvestment and upgrades in this premium area of Emirates Stadium" (LONDON TIMES, 2/4). Arsenal "will only be able to send 750 fans" to its FA Cup tie against Sutton United. The fifth-round fixture at Gander Green Lane will take place on Feb. 20 -- "but hundreds of the members of the Arsenal Away Ticket scheme will not be able to get tickets." Sutton United's Gander Green Lane has a capacity of 5,000 and the National League side booked its "dream tie" against Arsenal with a 1-0 win over Leeds United. Arsenal said in a statement, "A random ballot will be held to determine which Away Ticket Scheme members will receive a ticket to this match" (THE SUN, 2/3).

McLaren's 2017 Formula 1 car "will be a break with the past" and the era of "now-departed" Chair Ron Dennis, the team said on Friday.

McLaren announced the car "would no longer have the MP4 prefix" that has been carried by every McLaren since '81. The team said that the new Honda-powered car, "which would have been the MP4-32, would now be designated the MCL32." The car is "due to be launched" at the team's Woking HQ on Feb. 24 (REUTERS, 2/3).

League One side Millwall described itself as "deeply concerned" over Lewisham Council’s "failure to formally make clear its position in regards to the compulsory purchase order that has threatened the club’s existence." It was announced on Jan. 25 that the plan to evict the club from its land around The Den "had been abandoned after months of public pressure and a media campaign." Lewisham Mayor Steve Bullock said in a statement that the CPO on Millwall’s land "should not proceed." Yet at a council meeting six days later, "the order was said to have been postponed" and not canceled (London GUARDIAN, 2/3).
