Franchise Notes: McLaren To Have Revised Honda Engine For '17 Formula 1 Season

McLaren "will have a revised Honda engine this season as the former world champions seek to push their way back among Formula One's frontrunners." McLaren Technical Dir Tim Goss: "For 2017, the Honda engine architecture and layout have been altered to serve both for performance and packaging needs. The new power unit takes much of the learning from the past two seasons, but has been specifically redesigned for this season." McLaren is the only team using the Japanese engines (REUTERS, 1/6).

FA Women's Super League 1 side Sunderland Ladies will "revert to part-time status after three years employing some full-time players." The Lady Black Cats finished seventh in the league last year and fourth in '15 after promotion in '14. A club statement said, "Having a mix of full-time and part-time players was not working as effectively as the club, and indeed the players, had envisaged" (BBC, 1/5).

Fans of League Two side Morecambe paid £1,000 ($1,200) for the fine and costs imposed on Manager Jim Bentley by the FA. The 40-year-old "was given the fine and a two-match touchline ban after being sent to the stands" during the game against Cheltenham on Dec. 17. The club is currently "under serious financial pressure" and operating under a transfer embargo (BBC, 1/8).
