Bayern President Uli Hoeneß Says Club To Re-Open Talks With Red Bull About New Arena

Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich and Austria energy drink producer Red Bull "have re-opened discussions about a new multi-purpose arena in Munich," according to SPORT BILD. Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeneß: "We'd like to have an arena for 10,000 to 12,000 spectators." The club's basketball team currently plays at the 6,700-seat Audi Dome. The two sides previously abandoned plans for an arena due to scheduling and financial concerns. However, the difficulty of increasing the Audi Dome's capacity led the club to reconsider. Bayern made clear that it is only open to the idea of a new arena under certain conditions. Hoeneß: "Red Bull would have to finance [the project], which would cost around €80M-€100M ($84M-$105M). We would only be a tenant." In addition to Bayern Munich's Basketball Bundesliga team, the potential new arena would also be the home venue for Red Bull's German Hockey League (DEL) side, EHC Red Bull Munich (SPORT BILD, 1/4).
