Fog Wreaks Havoc On Friday's Football League Fixtures

There was "more than a little confusion and a smattering of anger on Friday night when fog decided to wreak havoc on the evening's Football League fixtures," according to the London TELEGRAPH. Brighton & Hove Albion's League Championship clash with Cardiff City was "called off more than an hour ahead to kick-off, but it was the decision to abandon Fulham's match at Reading after 45 minutes that caused most bemusement -- a move that seemed more bizarre when photographs of a fog-engulfed Huish Park emerged, where Yeovil Town and Portsmouth managed to play their entire League Two match." Referee James Linington "twice halted the game at the Madejski Stadium due to fog during the first half." The match resumed on each occasion but, "despite conditions appearing to improve during the interval, Linington decided to call the game off at the break after consulting with his assistants." The decision was "jeered by both sets of fans inside the stadium and derided by many on social media," but Reading Manager Jaap Stam defended Linington. Stam said, "The linesmen said they couldn't see the other side of the pitch. They didn't want to take the risk if there was an offside or a tackle on the other side" (TELEGRAPH, 12/31).
