The MLB San Diego Padres hired former MLB player TAKASHI SAITO as an "adviser for baseball operations and the Pacific Rim." Saito "joined the Padres as an intern a little more than a year ago" (SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE, 12/27).

COACHES/MANAGERS: NÉSTOR GOROSITO was named coach of Argentine first division side San Martín de San Juan. The club has won three of its last 14 games (CLARÍN, 12/27). ... La Liga side Málaga announced that MARCELO ROMERO "has been appointed as the club's new coach." The former Uruguay int'l had been assistant to JUANDE RAMOS, "who left by mutual consent on Tuesday following a run of five matches without a win." Romero spent six years as a player at La Rosaleda and returned to the club in '14 to "join the coaching staff of JAVI GRACIA" (GOAL, 12/28). ... Former Nigeria coach and captain SUNDAY OLISEH was appointed as head coach of Dutch second tier side Fortuna Sittard. Oliseh, who stood down as Super Eagles coach 10 months ago, previously played for Dutch side Ajax from '97-99 (BBC, 12/27).
