Atlético Madrid Close To Deal To Take 50% Stake In Ascenso MX Side San Luis

After its success with Indian Super League side Atlético Kolkata, Atlético Madrid "has the desire to expand its brand and its next destination could be in Mexico," according to ESPN.com. Spanish newspaper Marca reported the club has reached an agreement in principle to acquire 50% of Ascenso MX side San Luis. The "principal objective is to help the team reach Liga MX, and also build a training facility and academy." Atlético Madrid "has considered various teams in Mexico, but ended up favoring San Luis due to the impact that a presence in the city would have." The Spanish club and San Luis "have been in talks for months" (ESPN.com, 12/27). In Madrid, Luis Aznar reported the city of San Luis Potosí has the 11th-largest position in Mexico, but does not have a team in Liga MX. Atlético "is yet to finalize the contracts, but both parties seem interested in the project." Details "like what the team would be named are yet to be defined" (MARCA, 12/27).
