Everton Stadium Architect Dan Meis Piques Fans' Curiosity With 'No Columns' Tweet

The architect working on EPL side Everton's new stadium plans "got supporters talking last night when he tweeted a picture of a Goodison pillar" and wrote, "No columns in the bowl," according to Beesley & Jones of the LIVERPOOL ECHO. Dan Meis has been consulting Farhad Moshiri on the new stadium, and was "pictured among the club's official delegation that inspected prospective sites" at Bramley Moore Dock and Stonebridge Cross in October. Meis was at Goodison Park for Monday's loss to Liverpool, and "took the opportunity to pique Evertonians' curiosity via social media." N.Y.-based Meis has designed American football stadia for the likes of the NFL Cincinnati Bengals (Paul Brown Stadium) and Philadelphia Eagles (Lincoln Financial Field), but his "only major project" for a European club to date, the proposed Stadio della Roma, is a bowl. However, "while there is a tradition for bowl stadia among continental teams," many Northern European football enthusiasts, including "the majority of Evertonians it would seem," prefer a four-sided design. Meis was queried by supporters on his statement and "offered clarification" by responding, "To be clear ... 'Bowl' is a generic term for seating, not a reference to shape." It is "unclear just how long Meis has been working in conjunction with Everton," but he attended the FA Cup semifinal against ManU at Wembley in April (LIVERPOOL ECHO, 12/20).
