Bayern Munich President Calls For Elimination Of '50+1 Rule' In Germany

Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeneß "has called for the elimination of the '50+1 rule' in Germany," according to Gabriel Wagner of SPONSORs. Hoeneß: "I'm totally for the elimination of the 50+1 rule. Not because we would change anything ... but to finally end the discussion." Hoeneß said that Bundesliga clubs and their members should decide for themselves whether they want to sell the majority of a club to an investor. He said, "In my opinion, each club can sell their shares to whoever they want. I don't care. We won't do it, our fans know that, and they get a 100% guarantee from me personally." Hoeneß would value the team at somewhere from €1.5B-€2B ($1.6B-$2.1B) (SPONSORs, 12/12). The 50+1 rule states that the majority of a club's voting rights, at least 51%, have to remain with its members. The rule prevents rich investors from acquiring a majority stake of a Bundesliga team (SBD Global).
