Event Notes: Brazil, Argentina Set To Face Off At Melbourne Cricket Ground

The Victorian government is expected to announce it "will host the SuperClásico de las Americas" between Brazil and Argentina at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. As a bonus, one of the teams "will likely stay on to play Australia in a warm-up match a few days later, before the Socceroos head to June’s Confederations Cup in Russia." The announcement regarding the Brazil-Argentina game, which has been 12 months in the making, "will be made in the next few weeks." Hosting five-time World Cup winner Brazil and two-time champion Argentina "will be a massive coup for Victoria." The game "is sure to test the MCG’s 100,000 capacity as well as bring in tens of millions of tourism dollars" (THE AUSTRALIAN, 12/13).

Sydney "looks set to play host to the opening game" of the U.S. college football season for a second straight year, with Stanford University slated to play Rice University at ANZ Stadium next August. ANZ Stadium staged the '16 season opener between the University of California and University of Hawaii in August. Stanford said that it was "only awaiting formal approval from the NCAA to play their first game in Sydney" (AP, 12/12).
