ManU At Risk Of Failing To Reach Next Season's Champions League, Losing $49.7M

The consequences of ManU failing to reach next season’s Champions League "represent the most significant in history" as Manager José Mourinho "continues to flounder at Old Trafford," according to Jack Gaughan of the London DAILY MAIL. ManU is eight points below fourth-placed Arsenal. Champions League qualification "was the minimum expected of Mourinho this season." The basic figure of lost earnings should it "not manage it" would rocket to almost £40M ($49.7M) but in reality "will be far higher." Potential financials next season "do not make pretty reading" for ManU should it not qualify for Europe’s premier competition in '17-18. Annual profit from the £750M ($931M) adidas kit deal will automatically be cut by 30%, meaning money in from that contract ends £22.5M ($27.9M) "light." The adidas contract "always stipulated that no Champions League football for two consecutive seasons saw the huge snip" (DAILY MAIL, 11/28). The BBC reported Mourinho has been charged by the FA for "kicking a bottle in frustration during the 1-1 draw against West Ham at Old Trafford on Sunday." Mourinho, who was sent to the stands by referee Jon Moss, was charged with "improper conduct" on Monday. He has until 6pm local time on Thursday to respond (BBC, 11/28).
