StarTimes Acquires Media Rights To Ghanaian Premier League For Next 10 Years

StarTimes Group has "signed a media agreement with Ghana Football Association" that will see it "exclusively air the Ghanaian Premier League" for the next 10 years, according to TELECOM PAPER. The deal will see "StarTimes acquire all media rights to the GPL, the National Division One League, the MTN FA Cup, the Ghana Women's League and the Ghana Juvenile League in sub-Saharan Africa for the next ten years." The company will pay $17.9M for the deal, "will fund the building of ten artificial pitches around the country and will provide the GFA with a fully equipped audio visual production van" (TELECOM PAPER, 11/25). LEADERSHIP NEWS' Onyeanuna Onyedikachi reported StarTimes is an "experienced TV operator in football broadcasting." In '15, StarTimes signed "an exclusive broadcasting contract" with the Bundesliga and the Int'l Champions Cup for five successive years, and "got the wide rights" to televise Ligue 1 and Serie A, for all Sub-Saharan countries. In June, StarTimes also signed an exclusive broadcasting contract with the Chinese Super League for three successive years and "acquired media rights to provide extensive coverage in Sub-Saharan Africa to the European Qualifiers for 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia." Ghana FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi said, "StarTimes' experience and advantage in broadcasting technology will bring Ghana's football to a new age" (LEADERSHIP NEWS, 11/26).
