Premier League Lands $600M TV Deal To Show Matches In China

The Premier League's new TV deal in China "will see the top flight earn 12 times as much per season as the previous agreement," according to Amitai Winehouse of the London DAILY MAIL. The rights have been purchased by Suning's PPTV streaming service for $600M over three seasons. Suning's deal "will kick in" from the beginning of the '19-20 season. That means the English top flight will earn $200M per season from the broadcasting deal, "a staggering rise from the last agreement," which was worth $17M to the Premier League. The agreement "sees China become the most lucrative overseas territory for the Premier League." Previously, NBC's agreement to broadcast the Premier League in the U.S. "was the highest value foreign deal," at $1B for seven seasons, or $167M per campaign (DAILY MAIL, 11/17). The AP's Rob Harris reported PPTV is part of the Suning group which owns Serie A side Inter Milan and "currently has the rights" to broadcast La Liga games in China. The Premier League has "just started a new TV rights cycle," generating around £8.3B ($10B) from broadcasters globally through '19 (AP, 11/17).
