League Two Side Notts County Reportedly In Talks With Joseph Molloy-Led Consortium

Sources said that negotiations "are progressing well" between League Two side Notts County and a "consortium led by a member of the billionaire family" who used to own the MLB New York Yankees, according to SKY SPORTS. Joseph Molloy "is understood to be heading the consortium -- he was managing partner of the Yankees for a decade." He is also the son-in-law of George Steinbrenner. There is "still no official word from Notts," although a takeover reportedly "could be agreed before the end of the month" (SKY SPORTS, 11/14). ESPN.com reported the Yankees said on Monday that a report "they are interested" in taking over Notts County was "not true." A club source dismissed the report, pointing out that the Yankees "already have a relationship with Manchester City" and own part of Major League Soccer club New York City FC. However, the source added that it "was possible that a person holding a minority stake in the Yankees could have had talks with County." Notts Chair Ray Trew put the club up for sale earlier this year, "but no deal has so far been forthcoming" (ESPN.com, 11/14).
