Geelong has emerged as a "genuine contender to join the A-League," as Football Federation Australia revealed on Tuesday it would open an official expansion bidding process "early next year," according to Davutovic & Windley of the HERALD SUN. At least seven expansion bidders "have expressed interest," including South Melbourne. FFA had "ruled out growing the 10-team league" until CEO David Gallop confirmed expansion was "back on the agenda" at the '16-17 season launch. A Tasmanian consortium and existing clubs Brisbane Strikers and West Adelaide have since "stated their intent to apply," while North Queensland Fury, Canberra and Wollongong have confirmed their desire to join. An FFA spokesperson said that the expansion framework "was being developed." The spokesperson said, "At this stage FFA have advised any interested parties who have made contact that a framework for expansion will be completed early next year which will allow them to submit expressions of interest in a framework which focuses on the viability of the proposed franchise and its ability to provide benefits to the A-League and the game." It is understood that FFA "heavyweights" have privately said that they favor Geelong and South Sydney as expansion areas (HERALD SUN, 11/15). The AAP reported FFA "holds concerns over whether Tasmania is appealing enough to broadcasters" and if its proposed home ground, North Hobart Oval, "is adequate." Both Tasmania and South Melbourne said that they are "ready to enter the competition next season," but it is believed expansion is "unlikely to begin" until the '18-19 season at the earliest. Gallop has repeatedly used the phrase "fish where the fish are" regarding expansion, "suggesting teams in capital cities" like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane will be favored (AAP, 11/15).
