Event Notes: Cricket Test In New Zealand Goes Ahead Despite Earthquake

The first cricket Test between New Zealand and Pakistan in Christchurch "is set to go ahead on Thursday, after the country suffered two earthquakes." A 7.5-magnitude earthquake on the South Island on Monday -- killing at least two people -- "was followed hours later by one of 6.3." Christchurch, about 110 miles away from the epicentre, "felt the quake strongly." But after engineers checked the Hagley Oval, the venue for the Test, "it remains on schedule to take place." Pakistan women, who are also touring New Zealand, "were on the 13th floor of a hotel in Christchurch when the tremors started." They are due to play New Zealand "in the fourth one-day international on Thursday" (BBC, 11/14).

Benin's economic capital Cotonou "will hold the 3rd edition of the international open tennis tournament" from Dec. 5-10 aimed at "promoting the best senior players from African countries." At least 60 players from 15 countries mostly from West and Central African countries, as well as a European and a South American country "are expected at the tournament scheduled in Cotonou" (XINHUA, 11/14).

World No. 12 Jo Wilfried Tsonga "has been announced as the ATP Lyon ambassador." Lyon "is set to once again have an ATP event after disappearing from the ATP calendar for couple of years." Previously, Lyon had an ATP event running for more than two decades, from '87-09. Lyon "will replace the Open de Nice Cote d'Azur in the calendar next year" (TENNIS WORLD USA, 11/12).
