Adidas Releases Environmentally Friendly Kits For Real Madrid, Bayern Munich

Adidas released "environmentally friendly football kits" for Bayern Munich and Real Madrid as part of its ongoing partnership with ocean conservation group Parley to help address the "major threats which the world's oceans are facing," according to Tony Connelly of THE DRUM. The new home jerseys "have been made from up-cycled marine plastic debris and feature water-based environmental-friendly prints" for the crests and sponsors branding. Printed on the back neck tape of each top is "For the oceans." Adidas’ Group Exec Board Member Responsible for Global Brands Eric Liedtke said, "This represents another step on the journey of Adidas and Parley for the Oceans. We have not only managed to make footwear from recycled ocean plastic, but have also created the first jersey coming 100 percent out of the ocean." The new collaboration "is part of an ongoing partnership with Parley for the Oceans, which has also yielded a new line of Adidas Ultra Boost footwear created from recycled plastic" found in oceans from around the world (THE DRUM, 11/4). CNN's Matias Grez reported both clubs and adidas agreed their logos "would not be visible to ensure the jerseys are as environmentally friendly as possible." Bayern's former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso said, "Wearing a kit that is made from recyclable ocean waste is something I'm very happy about, as it's a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness about the need to protect and preserve our oceans." Real Madrid will wear its shirt on Nov. 26 against Sporting Gijón (CNN, 11/4).
