League Notes: MPs To Question British Cycling About Therapeutic Use Exemptions

MPs "want to question British Cycling" about therapeutic use exemptions and "are concerned about transparency." Several athletes "have come under scrutiny after stolen medical records showed they used banned substances for medical reasons under TUE rules." Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee Chair Damien Collins said that MPs "wanted to understand the system." Collins: "It may well be that nobody has done anything wrong but is the process itself right?" (BBC, 10/30).

England-based players
"will be allowed to join up with the Scotland squad" for next month's Autumn internationals "after an intervention by World Rugby." English clubs "had voted not to release Scots amid a dispute over what they claimed were unpaid medical bills." But Premiership Rugby said that the sport's world governing body "will now rule on the dispute next month." Five England-based players "had been chosen for the squad to face Australia, Argentina and Georgia in November" (BBC, 10/29).

Five Cuban volleyball players, "convicted for the rape of a woman in the Finnish city of Tampere, have appealed the sentence," the country's volleyball federation announced. Cuban Volleyball Federation President Ariel Sainz: "They have submitted an appeal to the prosecutor and the victim, who have 30 days to provide their evidence." On Sept. 20, a judge handed down a guilty verdict against the five players for the aggravated rape of a Finnish citizen, after a close-door trial that ended on Aug. 31. The players denied all the charges "and stated that they had sex with the woman consensually" (XINHUA, 10/28).
