Scottish Rugby Union Receives Clubs' Approval To Seek Outside Investment

The Scottish Rugby Union "can now go ahead and seek outside investment in Glasgow and Edinburgh after receiving overwhelming support" at a "special general meeting," according to Stuart Bathgate of the HERALD SCOTLAND. The motion "to sell a stake in the two professional teams and the academies needed a two-thirds majority of the 167 representatives" who were at Murrayfield and eligible to vote, and the show of hands "was close to or at" 100%. No one voted against the motion, but the size of the vote in favor "meant there was no need to count any possible abstentions." Only 106 individual voters "were required to attend to ensure the meeting was quorate" (HERALD SCOTLAND, 10/29). The PA reported it "is hoped the move will give the two clubs greater financial power to keep their best players and compete with their rivals." Scottish Rugby CEO Mark Dodson said: "This was a pivotal moment for the game in Scotland and I am delighted our members have empowered us to move forward" (PA, 10/28).
