Tottenham Could Face $14.6M Fee To Rename White Hart Lane Station After Club

Tottenham is "planning to rename White Hart Lane station after the club" but could face a £12M ($14.6M) fee to do so, according to Samuel Lovett of the London INDEPENDENT. The Premier League side reportedly wants "to name the London Overground station ‘Tottenham Hotspur Station’" to coincide with the opening of the club’s new £400M ($489M) stadium, which is set to be ready for the '18-19 season. Plans to transform White Hart Lane station "were supposedly recommended for approval at a Haringey Council planning sub-committee hearing on Monday." But, according to Squawka, Transport for London "is demanding that the north London club hands over" £12M. Although TfL is prepared to change the name of the station, it has reportedly asked Tottenham "to pay the multi-million fee in order to meet the costs of changing the signage and maps" (INDEPENDENT, 10/12). In London, Sam Morshead reported in the meantime, TfL has "submitted plans to carry out improvements to the existing White Hart Lane station." The proposals include a "new entrance, forecourt and ticket hall." The club is "also interested in changing the name of a section of road between White Hart Lane station and the Tottenham High Road junction" as it looks to make the most of the £700M ($855M) stadium project. Chair Daniel Levy "will look to recoup some of his significant outlay on the club's infrastructure by selling the naming rights to the new ground" of more than £400M (DAILY MAIL, 10/12). Also in London, Tom Collomosse wrote if these plans proceed, they "would mirror those of Arsenal," which changed the name of Gillespie Road underground station in 1932 to match that of the club (EVENING STANDARD, 10/12).
