Ironman announced that the 2018 Ironman 70.3 World Championship has been awarded to Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa. The event takes place from Sept. 1-2 and is the first time an Ironman World Championship event will be held on the African continent. The Ironman 70.3 World Championship event expects to attract more than 6,000 athletes from over 100 global qualifying events in locations such as Australia, China, Spain, South Africa and the Americas. The championship is part of a week-long festival which will include a range of lifestyle events for the community and visitors to enjoy (Ironman).
The Ajman Cricket Council has launched its new stadium which will be known as Ajman Mulk Stadium "by staging a tournament with star cricketers from India and Pakistan." The Int'l Champions Premier League "is being contested by teams from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bahrain with hosts UAE as the fifth team." The league is being organized "by Ali Tours and Travels, India and supported by Red Bull" (GULF NEWS, 10/9).
Saturday’s A-League clash between the Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC "pulled a crowd of 61,880." The record attendance result for the Sydney derby "is even more impressive when put into context with other football codes in Australia." The Sydney derby match places in the top 10, "even against finals matches from the other codes." However, historically, the A-League "still ranks below the other Australian football codes on average attendance," with the Australian Football League maintaining its dominance (London GUARDIAN, 10/10).
