Belgian FA, Pro League Reach Agreement To Launch Video Referee Field Tests

The Belgian FA (URBSFA) and the top-flight Pro League reached an agreement with its 24 clubs to “launch the first video referee tests on Belgian pitches” starting at the end of ’16, according to BELGA. Like 17 other countries, Belgium is “officially a candidate to perform the field tests proposed by FIFA and the Int’l FA Board,” world football’s law-making organization. Pro League CEO Ludwig Sneyers confirmed that a budget was agreed upon to “install the necessary equipment and the contracts needed to assure video referee technology is in Belgian stadiums.” It will also train the referees on the uses of the new technology. The Pro League “hopes to perform the first ‘offline’ tests by the end of the year,” before a second “online” phase scheduled for next season (BELGA, 10/5).
