African football leaders elected Guinea's ALMAMY KABELE CAMARA and Ghana's KWESI NYANTAKYI on Thursday to represent the continent on the expanded 36-member FIFA Council. Camara, the Confederation of African Football's second VP, and Ghana FA President Nyantakyi will complete a seven-member African delegation at an Oct. 13-14 gathering of the FIFA Council in Zurich, chaired by President GIANNI INFANTINO. The meeting will include discussions to expand the 2026 World Cup to 40 teams (REUTERS, 9/29).
COACHES/MANAGERS: IVAYLO PETEV was named the new coach of Dinamo Zagreb, leaving his post in charge of Bulgaria to sign a two-year deal with the Croatian club while PETAR HUBCHEV has taken over his former national team role (UEFA). ... League Championship side Barnsley sacked assistant head coach TOMMY WRIGHT after allegations in the London Telegraph that he accepted a cash “bung” of £5,000 ($6,480). A statement from the club said, “After considering Mr Wright’s response to allegations in today’s Daily Telegraph about breaching FA rules over player transfers, Mr Wright was dismissed.” Wright denied any wrongdoing (REUTERS, 9/29). ... Nippon Professional Baseball club Chunichi Dragons announced that acting Manager SHIGEKAZU MORI “will take on the job full-time next season.” In August, the Dragons placed third-year Manager MOTONOBU TANISHIGE on leave, “effectively firing him and promoting Mori, who was the bench coach at the time” (KYODO, 9/29). ... League One side Conventry City Manager TONY MOWBRAY resigned “following a disappointing start to the season” that left the club bottom of the league with six points and no wins from 10 matches. Club Technical Dir MARK VENUS “will take charge of the team at Port Vale on Saturday” (PA, 9/29).
