Bayern Munich Could Rejoin Multi-Purpose Arena Project Led By Red Bull

The expected return of Uli Hoeneß as Bayern Munich president "could provide Munich's arena project with new wind," according to Mathias Müller of TZ. Hoeneß, who could be elected club president in November after spending time in prison for tax evasion, said, "I respect [Bayern's] decision to [withdraw from the project]. We will take a look at everything after the elections. If there are new opportunities ... you have to examine every option." Bayern Munich Basketball boss Rudolf Schels and current club President Karl Hopfner in February decided to withdraw from the project, which called for a new multi-purpose venue that would be the home for Bayern Munich Basketball and hockey side EHC Red Bull Munich. The other parties involved in the project -- the city, Olympic Park and Red Bull -- "are open to reopen the talks." Olympic Park Managing Dir Arno Hartung: "When Uli Hoeneß announced in April that he will be a candidate in the club's presidential election, we decided to wait. The Olympic Park, the city and Red Bull all agree: we are only waiting that Bayern Munich will join us" (TZ, 9/23).
