Wimbledon Begins Work On $90M No. 1 Court Roof Project

Work "is under way to transform Wimbledon's No 1 Court into the All England Club's second covered venue," according to Andy Warren of the London DAILY MAIL. As part of the Wimbledon "Master Plan" the second show court at the iconic club will have a £70M ($90.8M) fixed and retractable roof by '19, "with building work now in progress." A video posted to Wimbledon's Instagram account on Tuesday "shows a portion of the court's roof being removed, which is how it will stay for the 2017 Championships when seating at the venue will not be covered." This is reminiscent of how Centre Court looked in '07, "when its roof was being installed, with the new Court No 1 roof then taking two years to install before a planned opening in 2019." The project "will see two additional tiers with around 900 seats installed, boosting the show court's capacity from around 11,500 to 12,400 and creating a more comfortable environment for spectators" (DAILY MAIL, 9/20).
