Hamburg Set To Host City's First Ironman Triathlon Event In August 2017

Hamburg "will host an Ironman triathlon event for the first time in '17," according to the NDR. The endurance event consists of 3.8km swimming, 180km cycling and 42.195km (marathon distance) running. The triathlon is set to take place on Aug. 13 and will have the second largest prize purse of the Europe series after the European Championships in Frankfurt. The championships will have $150,000 in total prize money. Event organizers expect around 2,500 participants, including up to 50 professionals. Ironman Germany Managing Dir Christian Toetzke: "Hamburg has established itself as an important location for endurance sporting events over the past three decades due to its excitement for such sports" (NDR, 9/15).
