Event Notes: Sardinia To Host Start Of 100th Edition Of Giro D'Italia

Giro d’Italia 2017 will be the race’s 100th edition. It will start from Sardinia for the third time in its history. The Big Start of the Corsa Rosa was unveiled in Milan. The race will include three in-line stages on the island: Alghero-Olbia (203km), Olbia-Tortolì (208km) and Tortolì-Cagliari (148km). The '17 edition will mark the 88th Big Start of the race from within Italy, with 12 starts having been made from abroad (CYCLING TODAY, 9/14).

Cycling Federation of India will host the third edition of Track Asia Cup 2016 from Wednesday-Friday at the Indoor Cycling Velodrome at IG Sports Complex in New Delhi. Also, being the host country, India has decided to field one additional team, "SAINCA," in this event to give more exposure to young cyclists in the country. The event will see participation of 13 teams from 12 countries, namely Pakistan, Iran, UAE and Kazakhstan (ARAB NEWS, 9/14).

Organizers of the HKT Hong Kong ePrix "are thought to be planning to unveil the world’s first robot electric race car as part of their activities" over the weekend of Oct. 8-9. While details of "exactly what shape this promotion might take are yet to be officially announced" -- whether it be a race between a number of these vehicles, "simply a showcase of this new technology," or something else -- a “Devbot” prototype driverless car has undergone "rigorous testing" at the Donington Park race track in the U.K. over the past few weeks as the Formula E circuit prepares for its '16-17 season and for its debut around the Central Harbourfront next month. Formula E organizers have "long held plans to stage a driverless race" -- using what is known as a Robocar -- as part of their global circuit but are "keeping tight-lipped about how far into the future such a competition might be" (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 9/14).

England will be "without the support" of the Barmy Army in Bangladesh after the group "failed to receive guarantees over fans security while travelling to and from cricket grounds." The Barmy Army has followed Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales in "pulling out of the tour." The group was provided with a list of hotels that will receive police security and promised a "segregated area within the grounds" but was told fans will have to "arrange their own private security while commuting to cricket stadiums." No other official travel group is planning to arrange a tour to Bangladesh (London TELEGRAPH, 9/13).

There were "tense moments" during the Champions League game between Barcelona and Celtic after security guards found a "suspicious package abandoned." After "exhaustive analysis, it was confirmed that the object was nothing more than a lost bag and did not contain any type of explosives." The incident took place during the first half of the match (SPORT, 9/14).

The fourth Vietnam Mountain Marathon 2016 will take place from Sept. 24-25 in Sa Pa, Lào Cai Province. The event has grown to become one of the "premier trail running events in the region" with 1,500 people set to take part, including British ambassador Giles Lever. For the first time, the event includes a 100km marathon, making this the longest one-day run ever in Vietnam (VIETNAM NEWS, 9/14).

Toyota Field will host a MoneyGram SocioMX Tour 2016 match between Liga MX clubs Cruz Azul and Atlas on Oct. 9 at 5pm. The match, promoted by Sports Marketing Monterrey, will be the first club friendly at Toyota Field since Spurs Sports & Entertainment began operating the facility as the home stadium of USL side San Antonio FC (USL).
