Bid Cities Look To Drum Up Support For 2024 Olympics One Year Ahead Of IOC Vote

The cities hoping to win the 2024 Olympics marked one year from the deciding IOC vote on Tuesday with events, new digital outreach and high-profile proclamations. In Marseille, Paris 2024 launched the “Tour of France” speaking tour designed to gin up enthusiasm across the country’s regions away from its capital. Athletes will play a key role, with bid co-Chair and three-time Gold Medalist canoer Tony Estanguet leading the delegation. In Budapest, city officials marked the day by announcing a new event coming in October dubbed the Budapest Urban Games, a collection of table tennis, 4-on-4 football, cycling and running events to be contested in downtown Budapest. It is meant to demonstrate the city’s hosting appeal and heritage. LA 2024 co-Chair Casey Wasserman published an essay on Medium in which he clearly articulated LA’s argument to host the Games. He wrote, "Our goal at LA 2024 is to raise the bar even higher, and to deliver to the Olympic movement a magical, modern Games that sets new benchmarks for the future with no risk, no worry and no surprises. It is going to be a fantastic year as we Follow the Sun to progress." LA published a new promotional video called "Dream City." Meanwhile, Rome 2024 expects to meet soon with Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi, who has expressed grave doubts about the bid. Her opposition could kill the bid.
