Barcelona President Says Club Considering Women's Team In U.S.

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu said that the club is "interested in creating a women's football team" to play in America's National Women's Soccer League, according to the London GUARDIAN. Barcelona opened new offices in N.Y. this week and Bartomeu said that the club "was looking at various possibilities to expand its brand" in the U.S. Bartomeu added that he wanted "create a team that can take part in the National Women’s Soccer League" in the form of a franchise "that will help us to promote the club." Bartomeu: "The women's football league here is very interesting. We're thinking about the option, in the future, of having our own team here, to compete at the maximum level, and to help us become more well known." The NWSL was "yet to respond to a request for comment." The 53-year-old president, who took over in '14 following the resignation of Sandro Rosell, also said that Barcelona had "plans to compete in futsal" in the U.S. (GUARDIAN, 9/7). 

FOR THE CHILDREN: The FC Barcelona Foundation and UNICEF have joined forces in support of children with disabilities in a high-level meeting held on Wednesday at the United Nations HQ in N.Y. The event was to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the signing of the agreement between the FC Barcelona Foundation and UNICEF (Barcelona).
