UK Athletics Planning To Bid For 2022 European Championships

Great Britain could stage the European Athletics Championships for the first time in '22 after UK Athletics CEO Niels de Vos "revealed he wanted to bring the event to the Olympic Stadium," according to Ben Rumsby of the London TELEGRAPH. However, London "may face a major battle to win any bid under a process which now gives cities and countries the opportunity to host the corresponding championships in swimming, cycling, gymnastics, rowing, triathlon and golf." The first edition of the new concept, entitled the European Championships, will take place in '18, with Berlin "staging athletics and Glasgow the six other sports." Organizers are "hoping one city, country or region will bid to stage all seven in 2022." Sweden has "already declared an interest in doing so but there are no plans for a co-ordinated bid from Britain." An announcement is "expected next week outlining the bidding process, which is set to open in October and run for a least a year" (TELEGRAPH, 9/2).
