Discovery Adds Two More Olympics Sublicense Deals In Slovakia, Slovenia

Discovery Communications on Tuesday agreed to two more sublicense deals for its Olympics broadcast rights, this time in Slovakia and Slovenia. Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS) and Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTV) reached long-term partnerships with the U.S. media company to show the two upcoming Olympics in their respective countries. Discovery did not disclose financial details of the two agreements. RTVS and RTV secured free-to-air TV rights and non-exclusive radio rights to the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. Both public broadcasters also obtained select digital rights. In both territories, Discovery subsidiary Eurosport will continue to show both Olympics on pay-TV and through its digital services, including OTT service Eurosport Player. The agreements in Slovakia and Slovenia were sublicense deals Nos. 10 and 11 for Discovery in Europe. Discovery, through a €1.3B agreement, last year acquired the exclusive multimedia rights for the next four Olympics from '18-24 across 50 European countries and territories from the IOC. Less than two years until the start of 2018 PyeongChang Games, Discovery has yet to secure agreements in some of Europe's largest TV markets, including Germany. A Eurosport spokesperson told SBD Global the company continues its negotiations with the various broadcasters to provide the Olympics coverage in each market. "We have plenty of time to find the best solution in every market for delivering our promise to bring the Olympic Games to more people across more screens than ever before," the spokesperson said.
