Perform Group's OTT Service DAZN Confirms Communication Error Caused Rights Mix-Up

DAZN has confirmed an internal communications error caused the new OTT service to promote rights it did not have. The OTT sports service, part of U.K.-based Perform Group, has been left red-faced after falsely claiming it had the broadcast rights for the '16-17 Champions Hockey League season, which kicked off on Tuesday. DAZN, which officially launched on Aug. 10 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, had to retract the claim following the announcement of the hockey competition's actual rights holders. "We don't have the existing season, but we are in discussions to include it," a DAZN spokesperson told SBD Global. "It was a communication error on our part. We have the CHL from 2017." The company will amend its promotional documents to reflect the changes. The service's other rights, which include the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, NFL and NBA, are unaffected by the mix-up. Infront Sports & Media, the CHL's official marketing partner, announced on Monday the broadcast rights for the '16-17 season went to Sport1 and Laola1 in Germany and Austria. DAZN declined to publicly share its subscriber numbers after the first week of service.
