Event Notes: Mystery Virus Hits Newmarket, Threatens Cancellation Of Yard Visits

A virus sweeping through Newmarket, Suffolk, "could force the cancellation of yard visits during the town’s prestigious open weekend next month because of the risk of cross infection from the thousands of visitors who attend the event." Some of the biggest trainers at the home of British racing "have been hit badly by the latest outbreak." Their predicament "could cast a shadow over York’s Ebor meeting," which started Wednesday. Hundreds of horses among the 2,700 in training in Newmarket "are estimated to have been affected to varying degrees by the so-far-unidentified virus or by bacteriological infection, the latter of which can be treated by antibiotics" (LONDON TIMES, 8/17).

The 2017 ISA World StandUp Paddle and Paddleboard Championship will be held in Copenhagen and Klitmøller, Denmark. The competition is set for Sept. '17. The SUP and Paddleboard Racing events will take place in the country's capital, and the SUP Surfing heats will run in "Cold Hawaii," a spot located in Denmark's northwest coastline. Last year, the ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship in Sayulita, Mexico, "attracted a record number of 260 SUP and paddleboard specialists from 25 nations" (SURFER TODAY, 8/17).
