German Super Cup Match Beats Rio Olympics As More Than 7 Million Viewers Tune In

German public broadcaster ZDF drew more than 7 million viewers for its broadcast of the German Super Cup on Sunday, according to Sidney Schering of QUOTENMETER. The game between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund attracted 7.22 million viewers starting at 8:30pm. The number translated into a market share of 23.7%. In the target demographic 14-49, Bayern's 2-0 victory obtained a 21.7% share as 2.31 million viewers tuned in. Fellow public broadcaster ARD recorded at the same time a 13.7% market share for its coverage of the final round of the Olympic golf tournament. In the target demo, the network drew a 12.5% share for its Olympic diving coverage starting at 9:30pm. The women's beach volleyball match between Germany and Canada had a market share of 21.7%, along with 21.1% in the target demo (QUOTENMETER, 8/15).

SECOND BUNDESLIGA: DWDL's Alexander Krei reported German pay-TV network Sky drew 110,000 viewers for its broadcast of the 2nd Bundesliga game between Dusseldorf and Stuttgart on Friday evening. The number translated into a market share of 0.4%. The simulcast earlier in the evening attracted 140,000 viewers and had a 0.9% share. The game between St. Pauli and Braunschweig, which aired on Saturday, recorded 130,000 viewers. German free-to-air sports channel Sport1 attracted 160,000 viewers for its broadcast of the preseason friendly between Schalke and Athletic Bilbao. The resulting market shares were 1% overall and 0.8% in the target demo.

ON TWO WHEELS: Pan-European sports network Eurosport attracted 310,000 viewers for its broadcast of the Austrian MotoGP race on Sunday. The number translated into a market share of 2.4%, along with 2.2% in the target demo. The Moto3 race earlier in the day recorded a 2% in the target demo as 190,000 viewers tuned in. The following Moto2 raced was watched by 270,000 viewers and drew a 2.7% share in the target demo (DWDL, 8/15).
