German public broadcaster ARD "recorded a market share of more than 20% for its broadcasts during the first day of the Olympics," according to Robert Meyer of QUOTENMETER. ARD's coverage drew an overall market share of 21.7% on Saturday. In the target demographic 14-49, the 2016 Rio Games obtained a 16.6% market share. The swim events, which aired in primetime, attracted 4.34 million viewers (17.9%). Rowing drew the highest audience figure of the day, when 4.71 million viewers tuned in. The number translated into a market share of 18.3%. Other notable ratings:
- Men's Field Hockey: Germany vs. Canada drew 3.49 million viewers.
- Women's Football: Germany vs. Australia attracted 3.08 million viewers.
- Men's Basketball: U.S. vs. China recorded a 17.5% share as 1.25 million viewers tuned in (QUOTENMETER, 8/7).
OPENING CEREMONY: QUOTENMETER's Daniel Sallhoff reported ARD drew close to 2 million viewers for its broadcast of the opening ceremony. The event, which started at 1am German time, obtained a 29.1% market share as 1.87 million viewers tuned in. In the target demo, ARD's coverage drew 600,000 viewers and recorded a 20.8% share (
