Event Notes: Int'l Champions Cup Draws Third Consecutive Sellout Crowd

The Int'l Champions Cup match between Liverpool and Barcelona at London's Wembley stadium drew a sellout crowd of 89,845 spectators on Saturday afternoon. It was the second-largest attendance figure in the stadium's history -- only the 2008 FA Cup final between Portsmouth and Cardiff recorded more fans in the stands (89,874). It was also the third consecutive ICC game in front of a sellout crowd for tournament organizers Relevent Sports. Wednesday's game between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid attracted 82,012 spectators at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. On the same night, Minnesota set a new record for the largest football crowd in state history, when 64,101 attended the game between Chelsea and AC Milan at the new U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The fourth edition of the ICC preseason tournament will conclude on Saturday with the game between Inter Milan and Celtic in Limerick, Ireland (HJ Mai, SBD Global).

On Nov. 22, Turkey will host the draw to define the four groups for Eurobasket 2017. The tournament will be held from Aug. 31-Sept. 17 in Turkey, Romania, Finland and Israel. Despite the "instability following the attempted coup" against the Turkish government, FIBA has "full confidence in Turkey being able to host games" (EFE, 8/5).
