JUAN ANTONIO SAMARANCH "was duly elected" IOC VP in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday. Turkey’s UGUR ERDENER secured the second vice-president’s position that was available, "albeit by a less convincing margin than the Spaniard." All told, Samaranch received 69 votes in favor and six against; Erdener’s score "was 60-18" (INSIDE THE GAMES, 8/4). ... Indian businesswoman and Indian Premier League Mumbai Indians Owner NITA AMBANI "was among eight new members elected" to the IOC on Thursday. Ambani, the wife of India's richest man, MUKESH AMBANI, who is the chair of Reliance Industries, joined Int'l Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation President IVO FERRIANI of Italy, South African film producer ANANT SINGH and Austria Olympic Committee President KARL STOSS. Canadian Olympic Committee President TRICIA SMITH, Finland's SARI ESSAYAH, Colombia's former ambassador to the U.S. LUIS MORENO and Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee Secretary General AUVITA RAPILLA "were also voted in." The eight new members "bring the total number of IOC members to 98" (REUTERS, 8/4).

COACHES/MANAGERS: Former Everton, Wigan and Swansea Manager ROBERTO MARTINEZ "has been appointed as the new head coach of Belgium." Martinez, 43, "was sacked by the Toffees in May after three years in charge at Goodison Park." He succeeds MARC WILMOTS, "who left his post last month, two weeks after the Euro 2016 quarter-final defeat by Wales" (BBC, 8/3). ... Bolivia "appointed former Barcelona B coach" ANGEL GUILLERMO HOYOS as successor to JULIO CESAR BALDIVIESO. Baldivieso "led Bolivia to a poor Copa America Centenario showing" where it finished bottom of Group D without a single point (ESPN.com, 8/3).
