Biggest Screens In Australia To Be Installed At Perth Stadium

Perth Stadium has plans to "install two of the biggest screens in the south hemisphere at the new venue," according to Brendan Foster of THE AGE. The screens behind the goals at the eastern and western ends of the A$2B ($1.5B) Burswood stadium "will span a whopping" 340 square meters each. The technology -- supplied by U.S. Firm Daktronics -- will be the "largest at any stadium in Australia and will dwarf the screens at Domain Stadium" which are only 115 square meters and "near useless when it comes to showing tight goal-line decisions to footy fans." When the plans for the new stadium were mooted in '14, the screens were only going to be 240 square meters, but the Barnett government "delayed purchasing them so it would have the latest technology when the venue opened" in '18. Premier Colin Barnett said, "We ordered a big screen then we realized the technology produced an even bigger one -- which makes it bigger than the MCG -- so we changed it and got a bigger one." Western Australia Sport Minister Mia Davis said that the screens "would rival some of the technology" used at stadiums throughout Europe and the U.S. (THE AGE, 7/31).
