Argentine FA Execs Considering Terminating Fútbol Para Todos Contract

The Argentine FA "will dissolve its contract with the national government for the TV rights to Argentine football," according to GOAL. While "some execs want to move to pay-TV, others want it to remain free-TV." One of the topics that Superliga execs are beginning to address with the FIFA Normalization Committee is whether to continue Fútbol Para Todos, "which is currently free for every citizen in Argentina." At first, the AFA requested that the government "cancel the current contract" (which will expire in '19) to tender at the end of the year the TV rights to Argentine football to private businesses. However, "there is one point on which execs are not in agreement, and it is whether game broadcasts will remain free or not." Normalization Committee member Pablo Toviggino said, "The State has offered its ceiling, which for us is a minimum sum. I believe that we can find better revenue, so the Fútbol Para Todos could be dissolved by common agreement" (GOAL, 7/18). CLARÍN reported Argentine football clubs want to terminate the FPT contract "at the end of the year." They "made the request to the government in a letter following a contentious meeting." This "would end the free broadcasts of Argentine football." FPT Dir Fernando Marín said, "This season, football will be seen the way we have been doing it. We are not saying either no or yes to this proposal to end the Fútbol Para Todos contract. There are still six months ahead to define everything. We will analyze the letter that the clubs sent" (CLARÍN, 7/19).
