Event Notes: Local Japanese Governments Show Interest In Hosting Rugby World Cup Camps

Tournament organizers said that representatives of 26 local governments "attended an explanatory meeting in Fukuoka about hosting team training camps during Rugby World Cup 2019." In addition to those attending Thursday's meeting, 134 other local bodies "sent delegations to two other recent meetings in Tokyo and Osaka." When the process for selecting official camp locales was announced in May, a total of 136 local bodies "expressed an interest in hosting." Applications "will be accepted from Aug. 1 through Dec. 22, with the candidates to be decided sometime next summer" (KYODO, 7/14).

The Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship presented by Ford begins on Aug. 7 in Cebu, Philippines, "offering the biggest prize money ever put up in the country." A total of $75,000 "will be at stake" in the race with $14,000 going to the champions in the professional category. The runner-up will get $7,000 while the next eight placers will receive $4,500, $3,000, $2,500, $2,000, $1,500, $1,250, $1,000 and $750, respectively. Close to 3,000 participants from 43 countries "will answer the starting gun" (MANILA TIMES, 7/14).

The Volleyball Bundesliga will stage a Supercup for the first time this year. The inaugural event, which pits the league champion against the cup winner, will take place at Berlin's Mercedes-Benz Arena on Oct. 16 (Volleyball Bundesliga).
