Event Notes: Majority Of Premier League Academy Sides Decline To Play In EFL Trophy

Premier League academy sides had until Monday to accept an invitation to play in this year's English Football League Trophy, but "around half" have reportedly declined due to scheduling issues. The EFL has said that it will "now extend the invitation to as many category one academy sides necessary until all 16 available places have been filled." Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs are "among those that will not compete," while ManU, Liverpool and West Ham said that "it is unlikely they will enter." The majority of U21 sides will "be training abroad when the matches are due to take place, which has caused some concern" (SKY SPORTS, 7/11).

PRESEASON DISRUPTION: Super League's England internationals "will be facing their longest season yet" after organizers confirmed the 2017 World Cup will run into December. The tournament, taking place in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, is expected to kick off in Melbourne on Oct. 27 and culminate in the final in Brisbane on Dec. 2, "by which time Super League clubs are normally back in pre-season training." Super League kicked off on Feb. 4 this year and is "unlikely to start any later in 2017 because of the World Cup at the end of it" (London DAILY MAIL, 7/11).
