Olympic Notes: IAAF Turns Down 67 Russian Applications To Compete As Individuals

The IAAF's Doping Review Board "turned down applications from 67 Russian athletes to compete internationally" as "neutral" individuals, following a blanket ban on the country's track and field athletes for systematic doping. The All-Russian Athletics Federation said in a statement on Sunday that "it was informed by the sport's world governing IAAF that only one application had been approved, from long jumper Darya Klishina, out of 68 requests made." ARAF said on its website, "The rest of the 67 athletes who have been approved by the ARAF's board as they have fulfilled the federation's criteria to compete in the Olympics have been refused" (REUTERS, 7/10).

ELIGIBLE TO COMPETE: The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that banned South Korean swimmer Park Tae-hwan "is eligible for this year's Summer Olympics." CAS "reached a decision in favor of Park following his appeal" against the Korean Olympic Committee over the latter's ban on the athlete for the Rio de Janeiro Summer Games. The ruling "gives Park, the 2008 Olympic champion in the 400m free, barely enough time to make the national team." Last week, "a Seoul court also ruled Park eligible to make the national team for Rio, saying the KOC had no grounds to ban him from the Olympics." The KOC said that "it would respect the local court's decision and would take necessary steps after the CAS decision" (YONHAP, 7/8).
