Iceland Vs. England Match Drew 99.8% Of Iceland TV Viewers

Almost everyone watching TV in Iceland on Monday night “was tuned in to the country’s historic European Championships victory over England,” according to Mark Critchley of the London INDEPENDENT. Klobeinn Sigthorsson’s 18th minute strike was witnessed by 99.8% of Iceland’s TV audience. The figure “has been erroneously reported as referring to Iceland’s entire population rather than its television audience.” With 27,000 fans travelling from the north Atlantic island to France, around 8% of the population “is believed to be experiencing the adventure of Lars Lagerbacks’s team first-hand” (INDEPENDENT, 6/29). CB NEWS’ Thierry Wojciak reported for the England-Iceland match, French broadcaster M6 drew 7.2 milllion TV viewers, translating to a 30% market share. An M6 announcement said that it was the “best audience for a match without the French national team since the beginning of the competition.” The game was also followed on M6’s online platform 6play, which “registered close to 440,000 during the match” (CB NEWS, 6/28).
